I am a composer, singer, and musician. As a solo artist, I write and perform soul music. Sometimes I only use my voice and a piano, but sometimes I use analog synths, digital programming, or perform with a band. I also accompany other musicians on stage and in the studio, playing saxophone or singing backing vocals. My compositions and artistic collaborations build on a deep foundation in Negro musical traditions while incorporating elements from many other musical traditions from Indigenous southeastern woodlands of North America, Caribbean, West Africa, Europe, and East Asia. In my collaborations, I bridge visual and performing arts with an unconventional sound and music vocabulary. I thrive by creating commissioned work like “Step This Way,” a collaborative performance piece with Maura Garcia Dance Company. Or like the experimental symphony, “Fracking Music!” In my collaborations, I bridge visual and performing arts with an unconventional sound and music vocabulary.
